AI Adoption Fuels Small Business Growth and Optimism
By Paul Steidler: A recent nationwide study from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape for America’s small businesses, driving growth, efficiency, and optimism.
According to the Chamber’s “Empowering Small Business: The Impact of Technology on U.S. Small Business” report released on August 18, AI adoption among small businesses has more than doubled in just two years. In 2025, 58% of small businesses report using generative AI tools—up from 40% in 2024 and just 23% in 2023. This surge in adoption is not just about keeping up with the times; it is delivering tangible results.
The report’s most striking finding is that small businesses that effectively leverage technology platforms, including AI, are significantly more likely to have experienced growth in sales and profits over the past year, while also expanding their workforce.
In fact, 82% of small businesses using AI increased their workforce in the last year, directly countering fears that automation would lead to job losses. Additionally, 85% of small businesses using AI reported increased sales, and 84% saw higher profits.
AI’s impact extends beyond the bottom line. Four out of five small business owners (80%) believe AI will help their business in the future—a 20-point jump from last year. The vast majority credit AI and other digital tools with helping them manage inflation, navigate supply chain disruptions, and improve access to capital. AI is also helping small businesses build stronger relationships with customers and compete more effectively with larger firms.
Despite these gains, challenges remain. Concerns about cost, quality, and compliance persist, and most small businesses rely on third-party AI tools rather than building their own. Still, the Chamber’s findings make clear: for small businesses willing to embrace AI, the rewards are real and growing—fueling not just survival, but success in a challenging economy.
