Charters Need Not Apply
Letter to the Editor of The Washington Post
Your story (“Nine Seniors Win Scholarships to GWU, March 16”) was great news, not only for the winning students and their families, but for younger students across the District. Kudos to the faculty of Benjamin Banneker High for producing 4 of the 9 scholars.
But I was disturbed to read a George Washington University official comment that the roughly 19,000 students who attend public charter schools in the District were barred from competing for the coveted scholarships. Doesn’t the university’s administration recognize that they are doing these students a real disservice? And meanwhile, they themselves are missing out on some of the brightest, most motivated students in the city.
