Reform Of The Postal Service Is Long Overdue (From Townhall.com)
A report by Lexington’s Paul Steidler was quoted in a Townhall.com opinion piece advocating for the long-overdue reform of the U.S. Postal Service. Democrats are proposing bailing out the struggling entity in the short term, and Republicans are proposing structural overhaul. However, both parties agree that significant reform is urgent and necessary. The primary service of USPS is to deliver mail, but one of the biggest problems it faces right now is the growing inconsistency of on-time deliveries.
Steidler’s report detailed the root causes of mail delays, showing that they are principally caused by higher package volumes, which the Postal Service has been prioritizing over letters. “For the week ending December 26, 2020, only 64 percent of first-class mail was delivered on time,” Steidler said in the report. Yet, “package delivery was at 95% on-time delivery” for that same week, he pointed out.
