Pope Leo XIV Highlights AI as a Major Challenge for Humanity (From EWTN News Nightly)
EWTN, the global Catholic television network, interviewed Lexington’s Paul Steidler on its EWTN News Nightly program about Pope Leo’s views on AI, how they were formed, and why the U.S. and the Vatican should work together on this issue.
Anchor Owen Jensen began by saying, “In the early days of his papacy Pope Leo XIV has signaled that AI, artificial intelligence, will be a big concern for humanity … Pope Leo said the church offers its social teaching in the face of another industrial revolution” that is driven by AI. “The Pope also says AI is one of the major factors leading to picking his name,” said Mr. Jensen.
Mr. Steidler emphasized that because of the Pope’s training in mathematics, which is the lifeblood of AI, the Pope will realize the many positive aspects of AI. He added that the greatest threats to harm on AI come from China and that the Vatican and U.S. should work together on this issue, much as they did during the papacy of John Paul II against the Soviet Union.
