Stargate: “Put that name down in your books,” says Pres. Trump
By Rebecca Grant: At the White House Jan. 21, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison joined President Donald Trump to announce the formation of Stargate. Stargate is “a new American company that will invest $500 billion at least in AI Infrastructure in the United States and create over 100,000 American jobs almost immediately,” Trump said.
“Beginning immediately, Stargate will be building the physical and virtual infrastructure to power the next generation of advancements in AI. This will include the construction of colossal data centers,” Trump said. “Big, beautiful buildings that will employ a lot of people.”
Stargate rounds up more AI warriors in Trump’s battle plan. Initial equity funders in Stargate are SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. Read details from OpenAI here.
Trump said: “This monumental undertaking is a resounding declaration of confidence. It will ensure the future of technology. We want to keep it in this country. China’s a competitor, others are competitors. We want it to be in this country. I’m going to help a lot through emergency declarations.”
Trump noted they will build energy generation at the AI plants. “All made in the USA,” he added. “It could lead to something that may be the biggest of all,” Trump concluded.
AI can add a trillion dollars per year to the U.S. economy, according to economist Peter Morici. Progress with AI could raise productivity growth from 0.8% to 1.5% in a year, and that might even grow the economy out of deficit problems.
Including the AI barons present at Trump’s inauguration, Trump has a team of what he calls “world-leading technology giants” and their mission is central to America’s new golden age.
“We’ve been working with OpenAI and with Mosa for a while,” Ellison said. Abilene, Texas is the first of 20 locations.
“AGI is coming very soon,” Son said. “This is the beginning of our Golden Age.”
“For AGI to get built here” and “the fact that we get to do this in the United States, is wonderful,” Altman said.
Expect competition. Elon Musk says those companies don’t have enough cash to follow through. Let the games begin.
