The Bipartisan Liabilities of Federal Inaction on AI Frontier Models (From The National Interest)
The Trump administration does not want to talk about it publicly and neither do most members of Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike. It is not the budget deficit, but something worse.
At issue is how advanced and powerful artificial intelligence (AI) frontier models will be evaluated before public release, so they do not pose a significant risk of major cyberattacks. The consequences would include wiped-out bank accounts and attacks intended to pollute reservoirs and damage public infrastructure.
There is a lot of common and misplaced fearmongering on AI. Charges that it will lead to massive unemployment and that the machines will take over from humans remain common even though there is no evidence for them in the four years since ChatGPT was released.
What is clear and documented, though, is that new AI models can cause catastrophic cyber damage if they fall into the wrong hands.
Paul Steidler discusses this in The National Interest here.
