The United States must start paying more attention to Africa. China and Russia are. For the past decade, Xi Jinping has steadily improved China’s African presence through significant infrastructure projects and financial investments. China recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of its Belt and Road Initiative, which has provided hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of investments in roads, railways, and infrastructure across Africa and Asia. Russia has been cozying up to African states, too. Recently, Russia has increased its foreign military sales and energy partnerships in Africa to expand its influence beyond the European continent. Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary syndicate, has become prevalent in the Central African Republic and the Sahel, demonstrating the Kremlin’s interest in becoming a major player in Africa.
